There are four types of Mobility Scooters; Boot Scooters, 4mph Mobility Scooters, 8mph Road Legal Mobility Scooters and Folding Mobility Scooters. Each one offers a different benefit which could suit each user differently. Take a look at the four options below to help decide what type of Mobility Scooter you should buy.

Boot Scooters

A Boot Scooter is a Mobility Scooter that breaks apart to fit in a car boot. In smaller cars, you may need to have some parts on the back seat. They usually come apart in the same way; the seat comes off, the battery box lifts off, the rear motor assembly is detached and the steering column folds down.

Boot Scooters have a maximum speed of 4mph and are ideal if you only need a Mobility Scooter for shorter trips or fitting in a car to take to shops or for days out.

While most boot scooters will have some form of suspension; their solid tyres and thinner space saving seats can make them a little uncomfortable for people with severe back pains or similar.

However, their compact size and convenience of being able to fit smaller spaces, in a car or take onto public transport, *(check with your local authorities), makes a Boot Scooter one of the most popular choices and a lifeline for those who want to retain their mobility and freedom.

4 MPH MOBILITY SCOOTERS

Probably one of the most popular styles of Mobility Scooter. A fixed body Mobility Scooter for use on the pavement, with a maximum speed of 4mph.

As this type of Mobility Scooter does not come apart like a Boot Scooter, it is only suitable for using as a method of transport from your home to nearby destination within its battery range, (usually around 15 – 20miles depending on user weight and pavement gradient etc).

Most people will use this type of scooter for getting to their local shop, walking the dog or just getting out in the fresh air to visit the local park or see friends.

With more padded seating, larger size and as usually fitted with pneumatic, (air filled) tyres; this type of Mobility Scooter provides the user with a little more comfort than on smaller Boot Scooters and the stability of a wider axle.

8mph Road Legal Mobility Scooters

For some people who have recently given up driving, the ability to keep mobile with a little more range, speed and comfort is essential.

8mph Mobility Scooters can legally be used on the road by a competent driver without the need for a driving license, subject to any local or national restrictions.

With even greater comfort provided by much bigger seating, larger pneumatic tyres and wider axle, an 8mph Mobility Scooter also offers a much further battery range, usually in excess of 20 miles allowing the user to reach destinations further away from their home, or simply enjoy the local area in more luxury.

8mph Mobility Scooters will be fitted with additional features such as front and rear lights, indicators, horn and wing mirrors for added safety.

Bare in mind, 8mph Mobility Scooters do need to be registered for road tax, although there is no charge in the UK.

Folding Mobility Scooters

As the name suggests, Folding Mobility Scooters have the convenience of simply collapsing into a single, compact ‘suitcase’ shape. Most modern styles will do this automatically at the press of a button.

The most common benefit for this style of Mobility Scooter is the ease in which the size can be reduced for storage or travelling. Many holiday makers choose Folding Mobility Scooters for when travelling by Coach, Train, Cruise Ship or by Air.

Unlike a Boot Scooter, which breaks apart into several parts; a Folding Mobility Scooter typically reduces in size to provide only one single part – reducing the time and effort required to de-assemble and re-attach.

However, while their compact and convenient nature can be a huge benefit for some; do remember that as they are much smaller, some users may not feel so stable on unlevel ground. Therefore, Folding Mobility Scooters are best reserved for only when space and transport is most important.
